The Maritime Mile Heritage Lab will be an opportunity to explore the maritime heritage of Belfast using technology and innovation, trying out a variety of pilot innovation projects. Lookout for QR Codes at key sites to download free apps and try the innovative and immersive experiences for free.

The pilot projects have been funded by the HUB-IN Challenge Fund which is helping to nurture exciting new relationships between Belfast’s heritage, the creative industries sector, communities, and businesses along the Maritime Mile. It also supports people to develop valuable entrepreneurial and digital innovation skills.

The projects were all developed alongside local heritage organisations and communities to develop new prototype visitor experiences that animate and enrich the city’s iconic waterfront. The projects have all developed apps or experiences powered by artificial intelligence, augmented and/or virtual reality.

Ranging from interactive 3D/VR rooms, to trails, immersive experiences and augmented reality, the projects will all be bringing historical facts, artefacts and historic figures to life. They are also all linked to and influenced by key heritage sites along the Maritime Mile: Titanic Hotel Belfast, HMS Caroline, PRONI, St Joseph’s Church, and Sinclair Seamen’s Church. This year, you can go the extra mile and explore the Maritime Mile in a totally different and modern way. A great way to explore the outdoors through technology and innovation.

HUB-IN is an EU funded project that wants to transform and regenerate Historic Urban Areas while preserving their unique cultural and social identity and the environment. It is being delivered in Belfast on the Maritime Mile in partnership with Belfast City Council and the Maritime Belfast Trust. The aim is to make the waterfront a vibrant, accessible, heritage destination not only for tourists, but also for current and future generations of locals to enjoy.
